Forty-three years after its founding, comedy writers still make fun of Up With People for its unrestrained perkiness, but a father and son who each did stints as “uppies,” say they got a lot from their time with UWP.

Make sure you read our Style File subject’s fashion faux pas (last question) and see how she’s learned to get it right.

The credit card bills have been pouring in from holiday spending and the total amount due is shocking. Sound familiar? Two college professors who studied consumer spending habits found proof that people tend to spend more when they pay with plastic and less when they use cash.

Registration is open and spaces are limited for taking a full-length ACT practice test offered by the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. Register online or by calling one of the following libraries for the practice test that will be administered Feb. 7:

It’s a great street party in support of the arts, and the last year to party on Laurel Street. Next year the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge moves to its new HQ at the Shaw Center for the Arts. So don’t miss the fun.

INDEPENDENCE — On a recent afternoon, elementary-school-aged children ran around an exercise studio in downtown Independence designed to make exercise fun. Two boys hopped on a dance pad connected to a video game. Two other boys played a football game that requires them to move their feet quickly to advance their players on the field.

Pay close attention to the “Sesame Street”-themed float in this morning’s 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade. Walker High School sophomore Ashlee Smith, 15, and other members of the Bands of America Honor Band will be marching behind the float while playing a “Sesame Street” melody.

Over the years I’ve often snickered at the idea of New Year’s resolutions. People promise themselves they will quit smoking, cut back on television watching, or lose 50 pounds.

The same is true of ski boats, runabouts, party barges, offshore fishing boats and personal watercraft, not to mention canoes, kayaks and bateaus. Landing craft? The type of boat made famous at Omaha Beach and Iwo Jima? Not so much. But Rick Kogler has one for sale.
