NEW YORK (AP) — You're standing in line at a deli behind two day laborers fumbling with cash and struggling with English, when the clerk begins spewing hatred. Go back to your country, he says, or go eat at Taco Bell.

Trendy has probably never been a part of Chuck Close’s vocabulary. Of course, he’s not around to dispute or defend this statement; neither is his artwork as Ida Kohlmeyer’s work continues to reign in the Louisiana Art & Science Museum’s upstairs and downstairs galleries. She, too, was an unconventional sort, so it’s safe to say Close’s work should feel at home when it moves into her spot on Jan. 17.

The UFC ended the year with new light heavyweight and interim heavyweight champions while a legend in the sport was destroyed for the very first time. Wanderlei Silva was unable to complete his trilogy over Quinton Jackson, while Cheick Kongo solidified himself as an elite heavyweight in the UFC. As always the whole card was a great show with all three main fights living up to the hype. It was a night filled with knockouts, only two decisions and no submissions.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Last winter, my 10-year-old son and I headed to a destination that had friends and family wondering if we’d lost our minds. We went to Fairbanks. In February. We hoped to see the Northern Lights, though we knew there were no guarantees. If you stay three nights in the area, locals say you have a 75 percent likelihood of witnessing the phenomenon, but cloud cover or snow falling can ruin your chances.

OK, it’s understandable. Cordell Haymon’s wearing a crown and cape, he’s holding a scepter. And he just can’t help himself. “It feels appropriate,” he said. “I’m getting the royal treatment I’ve always deserved.” Jacqui Vines can’t help rolling her eyes. It’s in jest, not contempt. For she, too, is wearing a crown and cape.
